Earle Dumler - The Sequel!
We are pleased to present the return of The Ultimate Studio Musician – Earle Dumler! He joined us for our 23rd annual seminar in 2016, and we decided it was time for Part 2! In his afternoon master class he will talk about his life as a busy studio musician, talk about some of his favorite recording projects, and give some participants an opportunity to play along with a transcribed Cue Track from some of his sessions, as well as other music or excerpts that were influential in his life.

Lillian Edgren - Our Second Seminar Intern!
Lilly is a young oboist who observed throughout the day, performed her solo selection in the morning master class, and rehearsed/performed with our large ensembles.

Lillian Edgren began her musical career in August of 2019, at the age of nine, with the introduction of the violin. In the fall of 2020, as she entered her 5th grade year of school, during the height of the pandemic, she was required to choose an instrument for school band that she would be having to learn to play online. Of all the instruments to choose from, Lilly chose the oboe, without any knowledge of the instrument, solely based on her liking of the name. But, as with everything that Lilly chooses to do, she has skillfully and beautifully conquered many obstacles in her training of the oboe, with much dedication from Lilly, as well as her private instructor, Victoria Racz, whom she has studied under for close to a year now. As she has entered her freshman year of high school, Lilly is now the principal oboist of the school’s advanced band. Through her high school program, she is currently carrying the spirts of students and spectators at the Friday night football games, where you can hear her play the saxophone in the high school pep band. Lillian also performs, as an oboist, with the Portland Youth Conservatory Orchestra, a part of the Portland Youth Philharmonic. She began with PYP in their Centennial Year as a member of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, as well as the Conservatory. She has begun the 101st season with PYP this fall and is enjoying learning the delicate time changes of Mahler’s 10th Symphony. Along with with her passion for music, Lillian also has a very strong writers voice that can be heard in the three novels that she is simultaneously writing, each one separate but intertwined within the realm of the universe that she has created in her mind’s eye. Lilly also enjoys creating the characters of her books through various artistic mediums.

Wind Quintetting with Toyin!
Oboist Toyin Spellman-Diaz earned her Bachelors of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and her Master’s and Professional Studies degrees at the Manhattan School of Music. Her orchestral career includes performances with the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
Hailed by the Washington Post for her “smooth, controlled tone and excellent technique,” Toyin has performed concertos with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Manhattan Virtuosi, and with the Kennedy Center Youth Orchestra.
An original member of Imani Winds, Ms. Spellman-Diaz has built her career as a champion of contemporary chamber music.
Along with her Imani Winds colleagues, she is devoted to discovering new and diverse musical voices and cultures to increase and enhance the woodwind quintet repertoire. She has also collaborated with some of today’s most influential chamber music ensembles, including Alarm Will Sound, the Antara Ensemble and Camerata Pacifica. She is on faculty at New York University
and the Curtis Institute of Music, and is on the Board of Directors of American Composer's Orchestra.
The Con Grazia Wind Quintet was also featured in Toyin's afternoon class to play with selected Seminar participants in Ms. Spellman-Diaz's afternoon master class

Emily Liu was 13 years old at the time of our 2023 seminar and this was her bio at the time: Emily has been playing oboe for about a year, studying with Victoria Racz. She plays oboe in the concert band at her school, and piano in jazz band. Other than oboe, she has also been playing piano for nine years, starting when she was four with Dr. Natasha Agilina in New Jersey. After moving to Texas, she studied with Dr. Daredjan Baya Kakouberi, and is currently studying with Cinda Goold Redman in Washington. She won third place in the 2022 OPUS music competition in Washington state. She has won many local piano festivals over the years. She also plays ukulele and guitar. In addition to music, Emily participates in Science Olympiad, knowledge bowl, and math team in school. She enjoys playing tennis with family and friends, and competes in various local tournaments. She is currently an Enspire Arts Ambassador.

"English Horn EXTRAVAGANZA, Part 2", with returning guest, Carolyn Hove!
CAROLYN HOVE has been the solo English horn player with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra since 1988. Following her graduation from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, until she assumed the English Horn position with the San Antonio Symphony in 1986, Ms. Hove had an active musical career in the Chicago area. She has long been a champion of New Music beginning with her affiliation with Ralph Shapey and the Contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago and continuing with various other ensembles, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s New Music Group.
She has recorded 3 cds with Crystal Records, and in 2016 her recording of “Chrysalis” for English Horn and piano by Alyssa Morris (Joanne Pearce Martin, piano) was released for digital download on Amazon and iTunes.
Ms. Hove has appeared as a soloist in many venues and has performed many U.S. and world premieres. In January of 2003, she performed the world premiere of the Concerto for English Horn and Orchestra by William Kraft, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a work that was commissioned by the orchestra and written expressly for her.
Ms. Hove has presented numerous Master Classes throughout the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Asia. In addition, she has presented the annual seminar “English Horn Master Classes with Carolyn Hove” at Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah), Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana) and Columbus State University Columbus, Georgia). This was her second appearance as guest at the annual Northwest Oboe Seminar!

“Everything Oboe With Allan Vogel!” (Allan's triumphant return to the Northwest Oboe Seminar!)
Allan Vogel
Allan Vogel was Principal Oboist of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra for over forty years while teaching at The California Institute of the Arts, the University of Southern California and the Colburn Conservatory. He was a guest with the Boston Symphony, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center as well as performing extensively as a concerto soloist and making many recordings including the well- known CDs Oboe Obsession and Bach`s Circle.
Allan received his Doctorate in Oboe performance from the Yale School of Music where Robert Bloom was his teacher. He also studied with Lothar Koch of the Berlin Philharmonic on a Fulbright Fellowship after working with oboists Fernand Gillet and Josef Marx. He feels very much at home in Oregon having played for numerous summers at Chamber Music Northwest in Portland and the Oregon Bach Festival in Eugene; he has also performed and taught at the Sarasota, Marlboro, Aspen and Santa Fe Festivals. Allan has been a judge at the Sony International Oboe Competition in Tokyo and the Bischoff Chamber Music Competition. This was his second time as a guest at the annual Northwest Oboe Seminar!

“Making Music with Mack” (Exploring the musical legacy of renowned oboist and past returning NOS guest, John Mack.) Special guest, Jeffrey Rathbun.
Jeffrey Rathbun has served as Assistant Principal Oboe of The Cleveland Orchestra (TCO) since 1990, and was the Principal Oboe from 2001-03. He was previously a member of the Atlanta, San Francisco, Oakland, and Honolulu symphony orchestras. He won first prize at the 1988 Lucarelli International Competition for Solo Oboe Players, held at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall; his New York debut recital, in April 1990, was also at Weill. Throughout much of his career, Rathbun has been invited to serve as guest principal oboe, performing with the Boston Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and during the San Francisco Symphony’s 2014-15 season, which marked Michael Tilson Thomas’s 20th year as SFS Music Director, Rathbun was invited to serve as Guest Principal Oboe in concert and on the symphony’s 2014-15 National Tour. He opened the Chicago Symphony’s 125th anniversary season in September of 2015 in the same role. As a Buffet Artist, Rathbun was the only North American oboist invited to perform in the 190th Anniversary Concert for Buffet Crampon in Paris in November of 2015. He has been selected to be on the jury for the Prague Spring Oboe Competition in May/2019.
Mr. Rathbun teaches at the Kent/Blossom Chamber Music Festival, and, since fall 2006, has served as Lecturer in Oboe at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has been a visiting oboe professor at Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University, and has led master classes at the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music, and the New World Symphony, among others. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the International Double Reed Society.
A graduate of the University of North Texas, where he studied with Charles Veazey, Mr. Rathbun won the university’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004; he also studied with John Mack, former principal oboe of TCO, and earned his master’s at the Cleveland Institute of Music and was awarded its Distinguished Alumni Award in 2003. A composer of chamber and orchestral works, Mr. Rathbun’s compositions are published by Theodore Presser Co., Jeanne Inc., and Trevco Music. His works have been performed by numerous ensembles, including The Cleveland Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, and the San Diego Symphony, and have been conducted by Christoph von Dohnanyi, Leonard Slatkin, Jahja Ling, and Franz Welser-Most. The Cleveland Orchestra commissioned Rathbun to write an orchestra composition, Pantheon, which was premiered in the opening concert in the fall of 2018.

“Life, Music, and Other Musings With Alex Klein!”
Alex Klein (born 1964, Porto Alegre) is an oboist who began his musical studies in his native Brazil at the age of nine, and made his solo orchestral debut the following year. At the age of eleven he was invited to join the Camerata Antigua, one of Brazil’s foremost chamber ensembles. During his teenage years he toured and performed as a soloist, recitalist and as a member of several professional orchestras in Brazil. He then studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with James Caldwell, earning a BM and an artist diploma in music performance.
After a year at Oberlin he won first prize in the first Lucarelli International Competition for Solo Oboe Players held in Carnegie Hall. He has received many awards worldwide including at the 1988 International Competition for Musical Performers Geneva International Music Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. There he was the first oboist to be awarded the first prize since Heinz Holliger 29 years earlier. From 1992 to 1994 he was Assistant Professor of Music, with specialty in oboe and chamber music at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, where he performed with the Soni Ventorum Wind Quintet.
He joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as principal oboe at age 30 in 1995. He has performed as soloist with the Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Chicago Sinfonietta. He has recorded for Teldec, Boston Records, Newport Classic, Musical Heritage Society and Cedille Records.
Klein won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental soloist with Orchestra for his recording of Richard Strauss’ Oboe Concerto with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony.
Klein left the Chicago Symphony in July 2004 due to musician’s focal dystonia which had begun within two years of his assuming the first chair; during a tour of the Far East with the orchestra, he found his fingers would no longer allow him to play at his finest level throughout a symphony by Tchaikovsky, and asked to resign. He currently performs as soloist and conductor, often with leading orchestras. He served as a Professor of Oboe at his alma mater, the Oberlin Conservatory. He is also artistic Director of FEMUSC (Santa Catarina Music Festival, Brazil), participant in the Sunflower Music Festival in Topeka, Kansas, USA, and conductor of the Saint Barths Music Festival (in the French Antilles).
In June 2016, he was once again appointed principal oboe of the Chicago Symphony, and he served in this position until April 2017. Klein plays on an F. Lorée Royal oboe made to his specifications by the Maison Lorée in Paris. In October of 2018 he won the principal oboe position with the Calgary Philharmonic.

Martin Schuring “Reed Making REVELATIONS!”
Martin Schuring held orchestral positions with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, The Florida Orchestra, and the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra before joining the faculty of Arizona State University in 1992 where he is currently Professor of Music. Since 1980, Schuring has been a member of the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra, playing English horn and oboe in the Festival Orchestra as well as making frequent appearances on the Festival’s chamber music series. He also performed as guest principal oboe and English horn with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for several seasons.
Schuring has recorded for Philips, Koch International, MMC, and Summit Records, both as soloist and as an orchestral player, including the world premiere recording of Oboe Concerto, Op. 57 by Eric Funk with the Prague Radio Symphony on the MMC label. His most recent release is Rustiques, a recital of reed trio music with the Ocotillo Winds available on Summit Records.
Martin Schuring is the author of Oboe Art and Method (Oxford University Press, 2009), the first comprehensive book of oboe technique published in nearly fifty years. As editor, Schuring has prepared new editions of the Barret Oboe Method and the Ferling 48 Studies, Op. 31 for Kalmus. He has performed at every Conference of the International Double Reed Society since 1997, including featured concerto performances at the 2000 and 2001 conferences. As a member of the reed trio Ocotillo Winds, and as soloist, Martin regularly performs and gives master classes at universities and concert venues throughout the country. Martin Schuring has served on the executive board of the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) since 2002, currently holding the office of Past-President. He co-hosted the 1998 and 2011 IDRS Conferences at Arizona State University. Mr. Schuring studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with John de Lancie. Martin Schuring performs on Howarth XL instruments exclusively.

Oboist Humbert Lucarelli has distinguished himself as one of America’s foremost musicians. Hailed as “America’s leading oboe recitalist” (The New York Times), Bert Lucarelli “has proven his preeminence among oboists today” (The New York Daily News) and has been cited in the Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians as one of America’s well-known oboists. Mr. Lucarelli has performed and taught extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Japan, Australia and Asia. He has appeared in such music festivals as Angel Fire, Aspen, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Chautauqua, Marblehead, Martha’s Vineyard, Music Mountain, Newport, Victoria International Music Festival, II Festival Eleazar de Carvalho in Brazil and the Yale School of Music Chamber Music Festival in Norfolk, Connecticut. Among his most recent engagements are master classes at the Hochschule in Cologne, Musikstadt Markneukirchen and the Berlin University of the Arts in Germany.
Mr. Lucarelli’s wide range of musical activities has included performances with the American Symphony Orchestra, I Solisti Veneti, Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of St. John’s Smith Square, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Orquestra Sinphônica do Estado de Sâo Paulo, the Philharmonia Virtuosi as well as the Scranton Philharmonic Orchestra and Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic. Concerts with the original Bach Aria Group, the Trio Bell’Arte, the American, Amernet, Audubon, Biava, Cassatt, Chester, Colorado, Emerson, Lark, Leontovich, Manhattan, Miami, Muir, Panocha, Philadelphia and Ying string quartets have brought a vast new audience to the oboe. Of his performance with I Solisti Veneti, The New York Times critic Allen Hughes wrote, “Mr. Lucarelli is a true virtuoso on the oboe.”
As an orchestral performer, Mr. Lucarelli has performed and recorded under the baton of some of the world’s leading conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Fiedler, Kiril Kondrashin, Josef Krips, James Levine, Dmitri Mitropoulos, Artur Rodzinsky, Sir Georg Solti, Leopold Stokowski and Igor Stravinsky.
Mr. Lucarelli has recorded John Corigliano’s Oboe Concerto for RCA Victor, which was written for and premiered by him with the American Symphony Orchestra to a standing ovation at Carnegie Hall. The numerous recordings include such labels as Koch International, Lyrichord, MCA Classics, Musical Heritage Society, Pantheon and Stradivari. Mr. Lucarelli has recorded music of Bach, Baksa, Bax, Bliss, Britten, Debussy, Hindemith, Leclair, Lefebvre, Mozart, Poulenc, Rameau, Saint-Saëns, including the oboe concerti of Strauss, Telemann, Vaughan Williams and Wolf-Ferrari. His most recent recording featuring an All-Bach was praised in The Gramophone magazine as a “memorable recital that boasts a deeply expressive soloist”.
Mr. Lucarelli is Professor of Oboe at The Hartt School in West Hartford, Connecticut, The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University, and has previously been a member of the faculty at the State University of New York at Purchase. In the summer of 2002, Bert Lucarelli was the first American oboist to be invited to perform and teach at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China.
Bert Lucarelli is the recipient of a Solo Recitalists Fellowship, Consortium Commissioning, and Music Recording grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. He has been named an Honorary Member of The International Double Reed Society.

Returning guest, Nancy Rumbel, presents Oboe Improv 2!
NANCY RUMBEL is a professional composer, recording artist, performer and teacher. Her primary instruments are oboe, English horn, double wooden ocarinas, clay ocarinas and keyboards. She is well known for her work for the past 34 years with the GRAMMY award-winning duo Tingstad & Rumbel. She has also performed with and/or recorded on releases with Susan Osborn, the Paul Winter Consort, Jami Sieber, Cris Williamson, Catherine Marie Charlton, Wayne Gratz, Lydia McCauley, Linda Yapp, and countless others. Her latest recording project Confluence will be released in late May, 2019 with Celtic harpist David Michael and tabla player Benjy Wertheimer.
Nancy's imaginative sound palettes and willingness to delve into uncharted solo performance and recording opportunities with musicians, film makers, dancers, writers, photographers, painters, bird watchers and even psychologists have provided her with a very interesting life. “People are often unfamiliar with the instruments I play and are curious and motivated to use them. Due to their uniqueness, I am as much of an educator as I am a performer, consequently, at times I can feel like a curiosity, an endangered species and a pioneer all rolled into one. I have been challenged and rewarded by finding ways to make my musical timbres “fit in”!
Her gifts, perseverance, sense of adventure, humor and good fortune have allowed her to share her music with thousands of people in hundreds of unique venues including: Carnegie Hall, the Ho-Am Award Ceremony in Seoul Korea, Buddhist temples in Japan, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Grand Canyon National Parks, the grey whale calfing grounds in Mexico, rural and urban America, the Missouri Botanic Garden, Bloedel Reserve,the Cibolo Nature Center and the International Feng-Ya Ocarina Festival in China to name a few. She has orchestrated several compositions as well as arranged and composed a concert of choral music.
She has created a very unusual and entertaining informance entitled SURPRISE & WONDER for elementary school classrooms. This colorful event draws children into the world of music, art, diversity, design, and science. It is a celebration of the world of rare instruments that nourishes and supports the imagination and creativity in children. Nancy believes if the passion for learning and celebration of the new and unusual is cultivated in children, their lives will always be greatly enriched.
She is a pro-active volunteer with MusiCares which provides emergency financial assistance to people in the music industry. She was the first woman to be a PNW Trustee for The Recording Academy which she served for two terms. She is a founding Board member of BirdNote.org, a wonderful two minute radio program about the intriguing stories, sounds and lives of birds for which she composed the theme song which is heard by over 2 million listeners daily.
Nancy lives in Bellevue, WA with her husband Ron Rabin and has two grown children Aaron and Elana.

Daniel Stolper is Instructor of Oboe at Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp, as well as a visiting professor of Oboe, Indiana University. He is also a Professor emeritus, Michigan State University and was formerly a visiting professor at the University of Illinois and Louisiana State University.
Mr. Stolper’s performance experience includes: Former principal oboist, San Antonio Symphony, New Orleans Philharmonic, Lansing Symphony, Eastman Chamber Orchestra, with whom he gave the US premiere of Bohuslav Martinu’s Oboe Concerto.
He has given masterclasses in London (Royal Academy, Royal College, Guildhall School) and at the Birmingham Conservatoire; In Australia at the conservatories in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra; In the United States at Eastman School of Music, Cincinnati Conservatory, Hartt School, Peabody Conservatory, Arizona State, Wichita State, Florida State, Universities of Texas, Florida, Colorado, Washington, Oregon and many others.
Mr. Stolper has been a jury member for Isle of Wight (UK) International Oboe Competition, Fernand Gillet, Castello de Duino (Trieste, Italy), Juilliard School’s Strauss Concerto Competition, and the Lucarelli Competition (New York).
He has made recordings with Marlboro Festival Orchestra, Richards Wind Quintet, and Eastman Wind Ensemble (first oboist in works of Mozart, Strauss, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and Hindemith). He is also the co-editor of the “Double Reed” magazine, the journal of the International Double Reed Society.

The Operatic Oboe with guest Robert Morgan
Robert Morgan is the solo English horn and Assistant Principal Oboist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago orchestra. He is a founding member of the Rembrandt Chamber Players and is Principal oboist of Music of the Baroque, Chicago Opera Theatre and the Chicago Philharmonic. An active teacher as well as performer, Mr. Morgan is on the faculty of Northwestern University School of Music and maintains a private studio. Mr. Morgan has been the featured soloist with Music of the Baroque on numerous occasions, performing concertos of Vivaldi, Bach and Mozart and has been the soloist with other area organizations in concertos of Vaughn Williams, Strauss and performed the Chicago premiere of Joan Tower’s Island Prelude.” He has also performed with the Guarnieri Quartet. An avid supporter of new music, Mr. Morgan has commissioned and performed works by David Schrader, Jon Polifrone and Ilja Hurnik. He is a graduate of Indiana University where he received the coveted Performers Certificate. He has studied with Jerry Sirucek, Ray Still, March Lifschey and John Mack.

Dr. Stephen Caplan is Professor of Oboe at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and also serves as Principal Oboist of the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the Sierra Winds. In the summer he performs and teaches at the Orfeo Music Festival in the Italian Alps. His solo recording of American music for oboe and English horn, A Tree In Your Ear, has received international acclaim and includes the premier recording of Phillip Bimstein’s Half Moon at Checkerboard Mesa for oboe, frogs, crickets and coyotes, which was written for Caplan with a grant from the Meet the Composer Foundation. Fanfare describes it as “sublime” and Double Reed News writes, “beautifully played..it is hard to imagine anyone not enjoying this CD.”
Caplan’s performances have been heard at venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. He has been a featured soloist with numerous orchestras including the Arctic Chamber Orchestra, Festival Orchestra of Chernigov (Ukraine), Las Vegas Philharmonic, New Orleans Philharmonic, and the Oregon Symphony. His performances have been heard on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered and Performance Today. He has recently played in orchestras seen on the Latin Grammys, televised internationally, and the PBS presentation 50 Years of Michel Legrand, also released on DVD and CD. Caplan is the only musical performer to win the Nevada Arts Council’s prestigious Artist Fellowship three times. With the Sierra Winds, Caplan performs on five critically acclaimed recordings and has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards including the Nevada Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.
His eclectic performance background includes professional affiliations with a baroque period-instrument ensemble and a Sousa style concert band, as well as soundtracks for television and film. Stephen Caplan has performed as a soloist with many of classical music’s leading musicians, including violinist Hilary Hahn and singer Jan de Gaetani. He has played in orchestras on the Las Vegas Strip, accompanying superstars as diverse as Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, Roger Daltry, Gladys Knight, Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti.
Caplan received a Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University, and Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Michigan. His principal teachers were Harry Sargous and Ray Still, and he was also profoundly influenced by study with flutist Marcel Moyse, and the tuba player and breathing expert, Arnold Jacobs. In 2004, Caplan became a certified Andover Educator after extensive study of Body Mapping with Barbara Conable. He now teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses on Body Mapping and Music Wellness at UNLV. Caplan has developed a new course for oboe players, “Oboemotions,” that uses applied anatomy to encourage more expressive and more efficient oboe playing. He has been a featured clinician for “Nora Post’s Oboe Blowout,” “Northwest Oboe Seminar,” and “California Double Reed Day.” His “Oboemotions” master class has twice been featured at the annual conference of the International Double Reed Society. In addition, Caplan has given master classes at many of the leading music schools in the country. His book, Oboemotions; What Every Oboe Player Needs to Know About the Body is published by GIA Publications.
Caplan is an active member of the arts community in the Southwest and has served as a panelist for the Nevada Arts Council and the Western States Arts Federation. He has been a member of several local boards and recently completed a term on the Board of the Nevada Arts Council, an appointment made by the Governor of Nevada. He is President of Class Act, an organization that sponsors arts performances throughout Clark County and reaches over 100,000 children annually. Caplan lives in Henderson, Nevada with his wife and three daughters.

Established in 1984, Mark Chudnow Woodwinds has been a leading innovator in the design and development of double reed products since its inception. Mark started as a repairman in 1980 and is one of only a handful of Americans trained at the F. Lorée factory in France! He brought to the business an understanding and creativity not formerly found in the field. Mark quickly brought to fruition some of the many ideas he had developed in his years of talking and listening to musicians’ complaints involving instruments and accessories. Among the innovative improvements are the CA and the Sierra line of staples. The CAs are the first line of staples to be consistent, seamless and chamfered. Mark’s English Horn and Oboe d’amore bocals are also noteworthy. Each one is constructed with a “tenon cork” at the tip, insuring greater airtightness and security than any other bocal on the market. Extremely popular among reedmakers throughout the world are the precision MCW hollow ground knives. On a whimsical note, Mark’s introduction of colorful swabs has brightened the otherwise black or brown world of double reed accessories. In 1990, the Sierra oboe was introduced as a natural extension of Mark’s skills and interest. Debuting in 1991, the MCW Oboe represents Mark’s endeavor to provide an oboe of professional quality at an affordable price. Hailed as “an aristocrat of his instrument” (Los Angeles Times) and “undoubtedly one of a few world masters” (San Diego Union), Allan Vogel is one of America’s leading wind soloists and chamber musicians. Principal oboist of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, he has appeared as soloist with orchestras throughout the country and has been featured at the Marlboro, Santa Fe, Aspen, Mostly Mozart, Summerfest, Sarasota, Oregon Bach, Music @ Menlo and Chamber Music Northwest festivals.
Allan has been guest principal oboist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for concerts in the major European capitals, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and Boston Symphony Hall. He has also performed with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Berlin and Los Angeles philharmonic orchestras. Allan is a frequent guest with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and toured Japan several times. He also performed at the White House during the last State dinner of the Clinton presidency.
His discography includes two solo recordings on the Delos label: Bach’s Circle (Baroque sonatas), and Oboe Obsession (virtuoso romantic works), which has been called “the single finest disc of oboe music ever recorded” by American Record Guide. He has also appeared on the Nonesuch, Dorian, and RCA labels and has recorded Bach cantatas with Helmuth Rilling. In 2003, he recorded the Bach Concerto for oboe and violin with Hilary Hahn and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under Music Director Jeffrey Kahane for Deutsche Grammophon.
Renowned for his performances of the Baroque literature, Allan serves on the advisory board of the American Bach Society, and is a member of Bach’s Circle Baroque Ensemble. He is on the faculty of the California Institute of the Arts, the University of Southern California and the Colburn Conservatory of Music.

Carolyn Hove has been the solo English horn player in the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1988.
Following her graduation from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, until she assumed the English horn position with the San Antonio Symphony in 1986, Ms. Hove had an active musical career in the Chicago area, where she performed with numerous ensembles and was a member of the faculties of Elmhurst College and Northern Illinois University. It was at this time that she developed her enduring interest in new music as the result of her association with prestigious Contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago under the direction of composer/conductor Ralph Shapey.
Ms. Hove has appeared as a soloist in many venues, including a recital on the acclaimed Dame Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago and appearances with the La Jolla Chamber Music Society, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and many other leading ensembles. In 1993, she performed the U.S. premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen’sSecond Meeting, for oboe and piano, on the Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella New Music Series, with pianist Gloria Cheng. In 1995, she performed the U.S. Premiere of Salonen’s Mimo II (a work derived from Second Meeting) for oboe and orchestra, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In Los Angeles, in March of 1999, she performed to critical acclaim, the world premiere of William Kraft’s Encounters XI: The Demise of Suriyodhaya for English horn and percussion, which was followed by a repeat performance in Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center in New York. This work was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and written for Ms. Hove and Raynor Carrol, the orchestra’s principal percussionist. In January 2003, Ms. Hove performed the world premiere of William Kraft’s Concerto for English Horn and Orchestra with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by its Music Director, Esa-Pekka Salonen. The work was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and written expressly for Ms. Hove. In addition, she has premiered works by Gerhard Samuel, Paul Turok and many others.
Ms. Hove maintains a busy schedule as a teacher whose activities have included guest lectureship at leading music schools throughout the U.S., Europe and Canada including the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School (London), the Royal Northern College of Music (U.K.), The Banff Centre (Canada), the University of Texas, and the Music Academy of the West. She also has presented the annual “English Horn Master Classes with Carolyn Hove” held at Brigham Young University. She has served on the Executive Committee of International Double Reed Society.

Grammy Award winners Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel have performed, recorded and touring together for over 24 years with 19 albums to their credit. Traveling to as many as 50 concert venues a year, they are friends who enjoy each other’s company and truly love making music.
Eric and Nancy began their collaboration in1985. Their debut album, The Gift, quickly became a holiday classic. The next 20 years saw countless reviews including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Billboard and number one debuts on radio charts. In 1998, American Acoustic was honored as “Acoustic Instrumental Album of the Year.” A Carnegie Hall appearance in 2000. And in 2003 they received a Grammy Award for “Acoustic Garden.”
Nancy grew up in San Antonio, Texas and continued her musical education at Northwestern University where she became interested in ethnomusicology, improvisation and dance. She was a member of the Paul Winter Consort for several years prior to her move to the Pacific Northwest.

Humbert Lucarelli has been hailed as “America’s leading oboe recitalist” (The New York Times). The New York Daily News wrote that he “has proven his preeminence among oboists today.” Prof. Lucarelli has performed extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Japan, Australia and Asia. He has been featured in the numerous music festivals including: Angel Fire, Aspen, Chautauqua, Marblehead, Martha’s Vineyard, Music Mountain, Newport, Victoria International Music Festival and Il Festival Eleazar de Carvalho in Fortaleza, Brazil. In the summer of 2002, he was invited to perform and teach at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China.
Prof. Lucarelli’s wide range of musical activities includes solo performances with the American Symphony Orchestra, I Solisti Veneti, Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra, London’s Orchestra of St. John’s Smith Square, The Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Orquestra Sinphônica Do Estado De Sâo Paulo and the Philharmonia Virtuosi. Concerts with the original Bach Aria Group, the Trio Bell’Arte, the American, Amernet, Audubon, Biava, Cassatt, Chester, Colorado, Emerson, Lark, Leontovich, Manhattan, Miami, Muir, Panocha and Philadelphia string quartets have brought a vast new audience to the oboe. Of his performance with I Solisti Veneti, Allen Hughes of the The New York Times wrote, “Mr. Lucarelli is a true virtuoso on the oboe.”
As an orchestral performer, Prof. Lucarelli has performed and recorded with some of the world’s leading conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Kiril Kondrashin, Josef Krips, James Levine, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Artur Rodzinsky, Sir Georg Solti, Leopold Stokowski and Igor Stravinsky.
Prof. Lucarelli is soloist in John Corigliano’s Oboe Concerto (RCA Victor), which was written for and premiered by him with the American Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. He has recorded extensively with Koch International, Lyrichord, MCA Classics, Musical Heritage Society, Pantheon and Stradivari. Fred Korman incorporates his unique background and varied talents, along with his passion for people and performance, in his achievements as a nationally acclaimed leader of workshops on the “Psychology of Performance”; as a renowned oboist; and in his private counseling practice.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Korman maintains a private counseling practice in Portland where he sees adults in individual counseling. In addition, Mr. Korman presents master classes and workshops at major universities and music festivals around the United States for performers of all levels and mediums focusing on the psychology of performance. The uniqueness of his combined expertise allows him to provide a richness of experience both as a therapist and a musician.
Mr. Korman’s training includes undergraduate work in psychology. He is currently a member of the Portland Gestalt Institute led by Dr. Jeffrey Sher, PhD, and Carol Swanson, LCSW. Among his most recent engagements are workshops at the University of Washington, University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and the International Gestalt Therapy Seminar in Siena, Italy.
The Principal Oboist with the Oregon Symphony since 1978, Mr. Korman is a frequent soloist in the Northwest. He has received critical praise for his “flawless playing”, “tour-de-force” performances and “lyric flair”. His performances of George Rochberg’s Oboe Concerto with the Oregon Symphony drew robust approval from music critics who said: “Korman played passionately . . . his oboe rang clear and true” (The Columbian) and “He cleanly etched Rochberg’s mournful and erratic themes . . . against the score’s constantly shifting patterns” (The Oregonian). His playing in the critically acclaimed Oregon Symphony recording of Strauss’ Don Juanwas praised by the CD Review.
Before beginning his tenure with the Oregon Symphony, Mr. Korman held positions with the New Orleans and Hartford Symphony Orchestras. In addition to his recordings with the Oregon Symphony, Mr. Korman has recorded both classical and jazz on labels including Delos, Opus One, Koch, and a premier recording of the Wind Quartet by Gieseking on the Centaur label. He has participated as Principal Oboist in music festivals including Tanglewood, Chamber Music Northwest, Peter Britt, Centrum, Shenandoah Valley, Festival of the Amalfi Coast (Italy) and the Saint Barthelemey Music Festival (French West Indies).
Aside from performing, Mr. Korman enjoys a successful teaching career, having held positions at the Hartt College of Music, Loyola University, University of New Orleans, Lewis and Clark College and Portland State University. He is currently on the faculty of Oregon State University in Corvallis. He has twice been a guest artist in the Northwest Oboe Seminar.

John Mack was appointed to the principal oboe chair at the Cleveland Orchestra by George Szell in 1965; during his tenure, which lasted until 2001, he also played under music directors Lorin Maazel, Christoph von Dohnányi and, most recently, Franz Welser-Möst. Since 2001, Mack served as a member of the Cleveland Orchestra board of directors.
Mack was born in Somerville, New Jersey, where he received his early musical training, studying with Bruno Labate and Marcel Tabuteau in high school. Friends urged him to study science or physics, but he was determined to continue with music, and went on to train at the Juilliard School with Harold Gomberg and with Tabuteau at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
His professional orchestral career began in the Sadler’s Wells Ballet Orchestra in 1951 and was followed by eleven seasons (from 1952-63) as first oboist with the New Orleans Symphony. He then had a brief stint with the National Symphony in Washington, D.C. Mack was also a founding member of the Plymouth Trio and a regular chamber music performer.
A renowned teacher, Mack was chairman of the woodwind division at the Cleveland Institute of Music since 1965. Many of his former students hold positions with major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He was also a faculty member of the Kent/Blossom Music program since its founding in 1968, and since 1976, he taught and performed at the John Mack Oboe Camp in North Carolina.
David Zauder, a retired member of the orchestra’s trumpet section, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer, “John Mack was an icon of the Cleveland Orchestra. He touched thousands of lives with his special way of helping. He made everybody better.”

During her twenty-two years as an Alexander Technique teacher Barbara Conable helped to save hundreds of musical careers and to enhance hundreds more. She experienced frustration, however, because she knew that thousands more musicians were losing careers and capacity. To enhance her effectiveness, she wrote the book What Every Musician Needs to Know about the Body and developed a Body Mapping course by the same name which is now taught by Andover Educators around the world. The goal of Andover Educators is to put music education on a secure somatic (anatomical) foundation for all time.
Barbara Conable is the author of How to Learn the Alexander Technique: A Manual for Students, What Every Musician Needs to Know about the Body, available from Andover Press and Amazon.com and The Structures and Movement of Breathing available from giamusic.com.

Dan Stolper is a member of the Interlochen Arts Camp faculty. He holds the degrees of BM, MM and the Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Robert Sprenkle. Further studies include work with Robert Bloom, Heinz Holliger and John Mack. He has served as principal oboist of the San Antonio Symphony, the New Orleans Philharmonic, the Greater Lansing Symphony, and the Eastman Chamber Orchestra, with whom he gave the United States premiere performance of Bohuslav Martinu’s “Oboe Concerto.”
Mr. Stolper is professor emeritus at Michigan State University and he has also held visiting professorships at the University of Illinois (Urbana/Champaign) and Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge). He has given masterclasses at all the major conservatories in Australia (in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth); at the Royal College of Music, the
Royal Academy of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London; the Conservatoire in Birmingham; and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
In the US he has given masterclasses at the Eastman School of Music, Cincinnati Conservatory, Hartt College, Peabody Conservatory, Florida State University, and the Universities of Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. He has been featured artist at “Double Reed Days” at Wichita State University, California State University at Fresno and for the Northwest Oboe Seminar in Portland.
Mr. Stolper has served on juries for the Castello de Duino Competition (in Trieste, Italy); the Isle of Wight International Oboe Competition (in the United Kingdom); the Lucarelli Competition for Solo Oboists (in New York); and the Fernand Gillet International Competition.
He can be heard as first oboist in the Eastman Wind Ensemble’s distinguished series of recordings for Mercury, including works of Mozart, Strauss, Stravinsky and Hindemith. He has also recorded with the Marlboro Festival Orchestra (under Pablo Casals) and with the Richards Quintet (for Crystal Records).
He is co-editor of the “DOUBLE REED” magazine, the journal of the International Double Reed Society.

Gayle Stuwe Neuman, voice, strings, and winds, co-directs the Oregon Renaissance Band and is a member of the Trail Band and has performed with Capella Romana, and Magnificat. She teaches Music History at Marylhurst University.
Philip Neuman, winds and plucked strings, co-directs the Oregon Renaissance Band and teaches Counterpoint and Scoring and Arranging at the University of Portland and Music History at Marylhurst University. He is a member of the Trail Band and has performed with the American Bach Soloists, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, The Chicago Chorale, Handel & Haydn Society Orchestra, and Spiritus Collective.
The Oregon Renaissance Band
The Oregon Renaissance Band is an 8 to 12 member ensemble dedicated to performing and recording music of the Renaissance, played on faithful reproductions of historical instruments. These include violins, cittern, harp, bandora, chitarrino, recorders, krummhorns, racketts, sackbuts, pipe & tabor, bagpipes, schreierpfeiffen, and percussion, many of which were built by the performers. The Oregon Renaissance Band has presented concerts and workshops since 1991 and has been featured on NPR’s “Performance Today”. Their cd with ensemble De Organographia is entitled “Carnevale! Carnival Songs, Frottole, Dances and other Festive Music of 16th century Italy”. In 1998, ORB performed at the early music festival in Regensburg, Germany.
Ensemble De Organographia
Ensemble De Organographia, Philip and Gayle Neuman, specializes in the music of four distinct periods; Antiquity, Medieval, Renaissance, and the 19th century, all performed on period instruments or faithful reproductions. Their concerts are entertaining and informative, combining text and song to bring to life the musical art of the distant past.
The repertoire of ensemble De Organographia is performed in an improvisatory style based on precepts preserved in period treatises. They perform ancient music of the Greeks, Egyptians and Sumerians on lyre, kithara, pandoura, salpinx, trichordon, aulos, psithyra, sistrum, syrinx monokalamos and tympanon. Their medieval repertoire is played on recorders, shawm, vielle, citole, bagpipe, douçaines, and slide trumpet. Their renaissance repertoire is performed on recorders, cittern, bandora, violin, sackbuts, carnival whistle, curtal, racketts, krummhorns, schreierpfeif, and pipe & tabor. Their 19th century performances are played on violin, viola, flageolets, cetra or english guitar, spanish guitar, banjo, czakan (walking stick recorder), ophicleide, serpent, and sausage bassoon.
De Organographia has presented numerous concerts, lectures and demonstrations in the US, Germany, Norway, Japan, Turkey, Greece, Israel, and Jordan since 1978. They have performed at the Getty Center, The Cleveland Museum of Art, Florida State University, Oberlin Conservatory, Case Western Reserve University, the Bodrum Museum, the Amman Music Conservatory, and the Regensburg Old Town Hall.

Jennifer I. Paull discovered the world of Music at the hands of an enlightened and very patient piano teacher as a young child. The discovery of the oboe d’amore, whilst an oboe student at the Royal College of Music (London), changed both her life and that of this almost forgotten, beautiful instrument to which she subsequently dedicated her own. She remains the only soloist in the world ever to have devoted a career exclusively to its cause.
Although having performed with many of the leading orchestras in England and Europe as an oboe and cor anglais player as well as being an oboe d’amore specialist (BBC Symphony and Philharmonic, English Chamber Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic etc), the orchestral repertoire was neither where her heart beat the fastest, nor in which the instrument of her predilection was anything other than an occasional guest.
Music in all its guises as well as performance itself enabled her to explore her passion much more intensely. This extended from orchestral concerts and solo recitals to publishing new repertoire (for all members of the oboe family of instruments, especially the rarest of its members), music therapy and education, the organisation of concerts and festivals and working in artist and orchestral management. The fascination with the Comparative Arts’ perspective of her subject led Jennifer Paull to writing.
“The lens through which I view my subject is one of a musician who delights in the juxtaposition and oneness of all of the Arts: their comparison to my own and the very lack of separation and division between.”

She has two sons and two daughters and lives in Switzerland near the French border in a charming, wine-growing village not far from Montreux. Established in 1984, Mark Chudnow Woodwinds has been a leading innovator in the design and development of double reed products since its inception. Mark started as a repairman in 1980 and is one of only a handful of Americans trained at the F. Lorée factory in France! He brought to the business an understanding and creativity not formerly found in the field. Mark quickly brought to fruition some of the many ideas he had developed in his years of talking and listening to musicians’ complaints involving instruments and accessories.
